Portugal and Republic of Ireland Play to a 0-0 Draw
Ronaldo Misses Penalty, Portugal Fails to Clinch World Cup Berth
Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty in the 15th minute, and Portugal was held to a 0-0 draw by the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup qualifying match on Thursday. The result means that Portugal will need to win its final match against Serbia on Sunday to secure automatic qualification for next year's tournament in Qatar.
Ronaldo had a chance to give Portugal the lead early on, but his penalty kick was saved by Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu. It was Ronaldo's first missed penalty for Portugal in 10 attempts.
Ireland, which had already been eliminated from contention for a World Cup berth, played a spirited match and had several chances to score. However, Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio made several saves to keep the match scoreless.
The draw leaves Portugal in second place in Group A, two points behind Serbia. Portugal will need to beat Serbia on Sunday and hope that Serbia loses to Luxembourg in order to qualify for the World Cup.
