Kim Williams Named New ABC Chair

Anthony Albanese Announces Former News Limited CEO Will Replace Ita Buttrose

Williams Brings Decades of Media Experience to the Role

SYDNEY, Jan 24 (Reuters) - The Australian government on Wednesday named longstanding media executive Kim Williams as the new chair of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), replacing Ita Buttrose.

Williams, a former CEO of News Limited, brings decades of experience in the media industry to the role. He has held senior positions at some of Australia's largest media companies, including Fairfax Media and Seven West Media.

In a statement, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Williams was "eminently qualified" to lead the ABC. "Kim Williams has a deep understanding of the media landscape and a strong commitment to public broadcasting," Albanese said.

Williams said he was "honored" to be appointed ABC chair. "The ABC is a vital part of Australian democracy and I am committed to ensuring that it continues to provide high-quality, independent journalism and programming," he said.

Williams' appointment comes at a time when the ABC is facing significant challenges. The broadcaster has been criticized for its coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic and its handling of allegations of sexual harassment and bullying.

Williams will be tasked with leading the ABC through a period of reform and renewal. He is expected to focus on improving the broadcaster's financial sustainability and strengthening its independence.
